About the Role
BDA is seeking an experienced Aviation Operations & SMS Specialist to lead implementation of aviation SMS artefacts and associated competency frameworks, training, and risk management initiatives. The role is based in Adelaide (or Brisbane), with hybrid/remote work options considered for the right candidate. Occasional interstate travel required. Australian Citizenship required.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead periodic and event-based Aviation Risk Management reviews; maintain safety objectives and KPIs; analyse trends and systemic issues
- Provide evidence-based safety advice to Accountable Leaders; prepare executive summaries, risk registers, and decision papers
- Help establish and sustain AVNOPS-specific SMS training across the organisation
- Support safety review boards and Just Culture reviews
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve SMS documentation including policies, procedures, work instructions, and checklists
- Manage role-based training, competency assessment, and document change control
Essential Requirements
- Practical, demonstrable experience managing an SMS in an aviation or Defence environment
- Advanced knowledge of aviation risk management strategies and frameworks
- Experience working in high-tempo Defence aviation operations
- Australian Citizen
Desirable
- Knowledge of Defence Aviation Safety Regulations
- Military aircrew experience
