About the Role
Safesky Systems is seeking an experienced Chief Remote Pilot / UAS Engineer to lead all RPA/UAS operations and contribute to the design, development, and testing of advanced drone systems. This unique dual role blends hands-on engineering with active piloting — reporting directly to senior management and serving as the senior operational authority for all flight activities.
Chief Remote Pilot Responsibilities
- Exercise operational control and oversight of all RPA operations under the organisation's ReOC
- Ensure compliance with CASA Part 101, Civil Aviation Regulations, and all applicable legislation and approvals
- Develop, implement, and maintain operational procedures, manuals, risk assessments, and safety management processes
- Lead training, mentoring, assessment, and competency management of Remote Pilots and support personnel
- Conduct operational planning, mission approvals, and flight risk assessments for complex and BVLOS operations
- Act as primary liaison with CASA and other regulatory authorities
- Oversee incident reporting, investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement
- Support business development with operational expertise for new capabilities and regulatory approvals
Engineering Responsibilities
- Collaborate on the design, prototyping, and testing of UAS platforms
- Integrate sensors, cameras, and communication systems into drone designs
- Perform system diagnostics, troubleshooting, and maintenance of RPA hardware and software
- Work on power optimisation including hybrid/renewable energy integration and battery management
- Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards
Essential Requirements
- CASA Remote Pilot Licence (RePL)
- Demonstrated experience operating under a CASA-issued ReOC
- Extensive commercial or defence drone operations experience
- Demonstrated flight experience with multi-rotor and/or fixed-wing drones up to 25kg
- Strong understanding of CASA Part 101 regulations
- Proven leadership experience supervising pilots and operational teams
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Proficiency in UAS design, assembly, and troubleshooting
- Experience with ground control stations, telemetry systems, and flight management software
- Ability to obtain and maintain relevant security clearances if required
Preferred Qualifications
- Power lift endorsement
- Experience with meshed networks and command/control systems
- Background in defence or tactical drone applications
- Knowledge of hybrid/renewable energy integration and advanced battery technologies
