About the Role
The Remote Pilot – Remote Operations Centre (ROC) is responsible for executing safe, reliable and professional remote flight operations from Sphere’s CASA-approved ROC. This role focuses on mission planning, live flight execution, monitoring and data delivery across customer operations, while operating within established ROC procedures and compliance frameworks.
The ROC operates year-round, including weekends, public holidays and scheduled night operations. Remote Pilots play a critical role in delivering customer outcomes, supporting demos and proof-of-concepts, and contributing operational feedback to improve Sphere’s systems and workflows. Remote Pilots operate under the operational direction of the Senior Manager – ROC and within the regulatory framework set by the Head of Flight Operations & Training.
The Ideal Candidate
This role suits a calm, disciplined drone operator who is confident operating in structured, safety-critical environments. You are comfortable managing multiple inputs, following defined procedures and communicating clearly during live operations. You stay composed when a situation deviates from plan, recognising early when something isn’t right and knowing when to act and when to escalate. You work well independently and take pride in consistency, documentation and delivering high-quality outcomes for customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute assigned remote flight missions from the ROC across a 365-day operational calendar, in line with approved flight plans and procedures
- Conduct mission planning, tracking and live monitoring during assigned shifts
- Conduct scheduled night operations using thermal, radar and low-light protocols where required
- Maintain situational awareness and escalate issues promptly during live operations
- Conduct aerial surveying, mapping, inspection and operational flights, delivering mission data within customer-agreed turnaround times and formats
- Support customer demos, proof-of-concept flights and new site onboarding
- Complete all flight documentation accurately and on time, and maintain flight logs and mission records
- Follow shift handover procedures and contribute to post-flight debriefs and incident reviews
- Provide practical operational feedback on system performance, usability and reliability
- Operate in accordance with CASA regulations, Sphere SOPs and approved operating procedures, maintaining required certifications and currency
What We’re Looking For
- RePL (Remote Pilot Licence) required, with demonstrated multi-rotor flight experience (50+ hours preferred)
- BVLOS OCTA / IREX endorsements, or willingness to obtain them post-hire
- Confidence operating in structured or safety-critical environments
- Availability and willingness to work rotating shifts, including weekends, public holidays and night operations
- Strong communication skills and the ability to stay calm and make sound decisions under pressure
- Comfort working across mission planning tools, ground control systems and multiple live monitoring feeds
- Experience in a ROC, aviation or similar live operational environment highly regarded
