Senior Base Manager – Engineering

We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Base Manager (SBM) to lead Engineering operations at base level. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for regulatory compliance under CASR Part 145, operational excellence, safety culture, and the performance of our engineering workforce.
Reporting to the Head of Engineering & Airworthiness, the Senior Base Manager is the designated Responsible Manager for the base and plays a critical role in ensuring safe, compliant, and on-time maintenance delivery.
About the Role
As Senior Base Manager, you will lead the planning, organisation, control and delivery of all Maintenance Services performed under the Approval Certificate at the designated base. You will ensure regulatory compliance, resource adequacy, workforce capability, audit readiness, and effective stakeholder engagement across Engineering, CAMO, Flight Operations, suppliers and subcontractors.
This is a leadership role requiring strong regulatory knowledge, sound decision-making, and the ability to balance safety, compliance, and operational performance.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the Responsible Manager under CASR Part 145 for the base.
Ensure compliance with CASR/CAR, Part 145 MOS, MOE and Part 42 requirements.
Maintain audit readiness and lead timely close-out of findings (including root cause analysis and corrective actions).
Ensure adequate workforce planning, facilities, tooling, equipment and maintenance data for approved scope.
Oversee aircraft and aeronautical product maintenance, including defect rectification, in accordance with regulatory standards.
Lead workforce planning, rostering, authorisation control and personnel competence.
Coach, mentor and manage Engineering personnel including formal performance and conduct management.
Promote and embed Safety Management Systems (SMS), Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Just Culture principles.
Liaise with CAMO, Flight Operations, Quality/Safety teams, operators and suppliers to align operational and compliance outcomes.
Escalate risks early and make evidence-based, auditable decisions.
Essential Criteria
5 years’ experience in a Part 145 organisation.
Demonstrated leadership of engineering teams in a regulated aviation environment.
Strong working knowledge of CASR Part 145 and Part 42 legislation.
Proven experience managing audits, closing findings, and sustaining regulatory compliance.
Experience balancing safety, compliance and operational delivery in collaboration with CAMO, QA and Flight Operations.
Strong safety leadership and experience applying SMS/QMS frameworks.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document decisions and outcomes clearly for audit purposes.
Experience in formal performance management and conduct processes.
Desirable
Formal leadership training (performance management, conflict resolution, investigations).
Experience leading organisational or cultural change initiatives.
Exposure to workforce planning, budget/resource management and authorisation control.
