Position Overview

The Aviation, Land and Maritime Transport (ALMT) Program is the sole provider of aviation meteorological services to the aviation industry within the Australian Flight Information Regions. Australian Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASRs) require pilots to plan flights using Bureau products.

Aviation meteorological products and services for operations below 10,000 feet are delivered by two forecasting centres: Brisbane Aviation Forecasting Centre (AFC) and Melbourne AFC. Operating within a 24/7 shift environment, the Senior Aviation Meteorologist provides operational leadership, oversight and technical direction across these teams (EL1 level, based in Brisbane or Melbourne).

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee operational service delivery within the Aviation Forecasting Centre, working collaboratively across Aviation Operations and broader Bureau teams
  • As part of a 24/7 roster, provide leadership and direction to the AFC operational team on shift, managing resources and workload while ensuring team wellbeing
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality aviation meteorological services, guiding the provision of forecast policy, aviation forecasts, warnings and decision support
  • Provide insight, feedback and recommendations to enable continuous improvement
  • Build and maintain close relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the meteorological community and aviation industry
  • Contribute to an excellent working culture, mentoring team members and peers

Senior Aviation Meteorologists are required to maintain an Aeronautical Meteorological Forecaster Competency. Aviation-specific training and certification will be provided.
