Royal Flying Doctor Service
Jandakot, Perth, Western Australia, AU
Australian not-for-profit providing emergency aeromedical retrievals, patient transfers and primary, dental and mental healthcare to rural and remote communities since 1928.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) is Australia's national aeromedical operator, founded in 1928 as an 'aerial medical experiment' and now delivering emergency retrievals, patient transfers and primary healthcare across rural, regional and remote Australia. Its core aviation mission is the emergency aeromedical retrieval: crewed flights to reach and treat people hundreds of kilometres from cities and hospitals, followed by transfer of patients to appropriate medical facilities. Operations span the continent, including the outback, under a not-for-profit structure funded through donations alongside government support.
The technical scope is broad and clinically integrated. Alongside aeromedical retrieval and emergency aviation, the organisation works in emergency medicine, primary healthcare, dental care, mental health support and telehealth-delivered health advice. A rural and remote health research function examines access gaps and health outcomes, informing service delivery across the network.
RFDS was established on the vision of Reverend John Flynn of a 'mantle of safety' for people in remote communities - a context that preceded aerial operations, when the journey to medical help ran to hundreds of kilometres by horse, cart or camel. The organisation remains mission-driven and heritage-conscious, with an operating model built around equity of access for rural, regional and remote Australians.
