About the role

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is establishing a merit pool for Senior Medical Officers within the Client Services Centre Branch.

A Senior Medical Officer undertakes aviation medical assessments for pilots and air traffic controllers and provides expert clinical advice and decision-making within CASA’s regulatory framework. The role involves applying advanced clinical expertise to assess medical risk and determine fitness for safety-critical aviation duties.

The role may require occasional interstate travel.

Key responsibilities

  • Undertake complex aviation medical certificate assessments, including review of clinical information, specialist reports and operational risk considerations.

  • Manage complex or non-routine certification cases requiring advanced clinical judgement where established guidance may not fully apply.

  • Prepare clear certification determinations and correspondence outlining medical reasoning, conditions, surveillance requirements and follow-up actions.

  • Liaise with applicants, Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs), and treating practitioners to obtain clinical information.

  • Provide professional medical recommendations aligned with aviation legislation, medical certification standards and CASA regulatory policies.

  • Contribute to complex case discussions.

  • Provide clinical guidance, mentoring and professional support to Aviation Medical Officers, contributing to capability development within the medical team.

  • Contribute expert clinical input to the development, interpretation and continuous improvement of aviation medical standards, practices and certification procedures.

  • Contribute to research, analysis and educational initiatives aligned with CASA priorities where required.

  • Engage with regulated entities and aviation stakeholders to provide medical and technical advice.

  • Other duties as required.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience in aviation medical assessment or comparable fitness-for-duty decision-making in safety-critical environments.

  • Strong clinical judgement, analytical skills and ability to manage complex certification decisions.

  • Highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Experience managing complex clinical information and preparing clear medical opinions.

  • Experience contributing to peer review and clinical governance.

  • Strong understanding of, or demonstrated ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of aviation medicine, civil aviation legislation, and relevant national and international aviation standards.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Eligibility Requirements

Employment with CASA is subject to conditions prescribed within the Civil Aviation Act 1988 (the Act) and the CASA Enterprise Agreement. The following eligibility requirements apply to this position:

  • At a minimum, prospective CASA employees must undergo pre-employment screening and must be willing to provide the required information to successfully undergo a police record check.

  • The position’s occupant must be an Australian citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain the required level of security clearance as required.

  • Undertake and pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug test as part of CASA’s Alcohol and Other Drugs Directive and Procedure.

  • Specialist Registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (without conditions that would limit the performance of the duties of the role), or eligibility for such registration or an acceptable equivalent international qualification.

  • Current qualification as an Aviation Medical Examiner by an ICAO State (or eligible for such designation).

Desirable

  • Experience in aviation medical assessment or assessment of fitness for safety-critical work.

  • Experience in occupational health, pre-employment medicals, fitness-for-duty or return-to-work assessments.

  • Experience preparing regulatory or medico-legal medical reports.

  • Ability to become registered as a Drug and Alcohol Management Plan (DAMP) Medical Review Officer (MRO).

  • Hold, or be enrolled in, a Diploma of Aviation Medicine or other postgraduate qualification in aviation medicine or related field.

  • Specialist registration or fellowship in Aerospace Medicine, General Practice, or Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Stakeholder Engagement Division helps to create and shape the environment in which CASA works to improve aviation safety by building trust and awareness with our stakeholders and by delivering credible, consistent communication, safety education and client services.

Step 1 ($232,723) with annual progression through to Step 4 ($275,816) plus 15.4% superannuation

10 paid clinical days per year and $18,000 professional development allowance
